The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
