The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.
This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His child, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's determination was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The legal document underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and return him to office.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
