Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
