However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in users injecting products of unknown origin.
Several experts said the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be marketed or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.
Some influencers try to sidestep the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with numerous of users, populated with photos of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed guides for mixing or administering at home.
Within moments of entering one community, a seller shared contact information, where the majority of transactions occur. The seller provided an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within two days. Buyers can choose between powder vials, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how much time a pen should last, vendors give contradictory responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Security Measures
A representative for the messaging service stated it regularly moderated dangerous content on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Cautions
“People are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in demand to current price rises for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.
Her staff has previously encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Statement
A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to possibly serious health risks”.
