The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
