Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
